The delegation of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms in the Renew Europe group supported a European Parliament resolution on the European Commission's Pollinator Initiative, insisting on addressing the causes of the disappearance of bees and other pollinating species, measures to protect them and to raise awareness of the problem.
„Already in 2016 The European Parliament drew attention to the alarming trend of decreasing pollinator populations and the importance of these species for European agriculture and the way of life and food quality in Europe, and in 2018. The European Commission presented the initiative's strategic goals. The Renew Europe group calls for a more ambitious approach – it is necessary not only to investigate the causes and direct attention, but also to take measures to deal with the already known causes. Among the priorities of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms is the provision of clean resources - ecological agricultural products and clean food for our citizens. We support a comprehensive approach to find the right balance, which does not represent an excessive burden for farmers, but encourages a gradual transition to low-risk pesticides and cooperative work between beekeepers and farmers," said MEP Atige Aliyeva-Veli as a member of the Commission on agriculture and rural development.
According to the European Commission, nearly one in ten pollinating insect species is threatened with extinction, and the number of pollinating bees and butterflies has declined by about a third. Earlier this month, the EP's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee also called for global binding targets to combat species extinction in view of the upcoming UN Biodiversity Summit in China next year.
The resolution, voted today at a plenary session in Strasbourg on targeted measures for the protection of pollinating species, was supported by the MPs of the DPS precisely considering that bees and other pollinators are of key importance for the reproduction of a large part of plants, including agricultural crops.
