The MEP from the Movement for Rights and Freedoms/Renew Europe Group in the European Parliament - Atige Aliyeva-Veli took part in a hearing within the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs in the EP, in which Valdis Dombrovskis - current Vice-President of the European committee, nominated for a new term as vice-chairman with portfolio "Economics in the interest of the people".

Asking the candidate a question, Aliyeva-Veli highlighted the impact of the construction sector on the economic, environmental and social development of the Union. She emphasized that the construction sector is one of the drivers of the European economy, but it faces many challenges related to competitiveness, labor shortages, resource efficiency, productivity. In this regard, she asked whether the candidate for EC Vice-President has already developed a plan and concrete measures to overcome the labor shortage, as well as targeted investments, by region, to create high-tech training centers. In addition, she asked how the EC will encourage and engage builders to participate in a common European platform to minimize the environmental footprint during and after the construction process, and to raise environmental standards and introduce clear construction quality indicators in the context of climate change.

In response, the EC Vice-President candidate pointed out that indeed employment in the construction sector continues to grow, and is of particular importance for some countries, which is why it is also one of the sectors with the highest rate of worker mobility and posting of workers . He added that an important element is the lack of skills, which is why it is necessary to make efforts to modernize the opportunities under the Skills Program in Europe, the European Social Fund and the opportunities related to social dialogue, to make a transition towards increasing skills, digitalization and improving the environmental footprint of the secto.

The answer I received was too general, but even after the hearing, in a subsequent dialogue with Mr. Dombrovskis, I will continue to insist on measures, a concrete concept and targeted funds by region. In my work, I will also focus on other sectors important for Bulgaria - such as agriculture, transport, health care", commented the Bulgarian MEP.

The hearing held in the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs is part of the procedure for constituting the cabinet of the new European Commission under the leadership of President Ursula von der Leyen. After a transfer evaluation by the Committee on Legal Affairs of the EP, answers to written questions and the opening speech, oral questions and answers, the representatives of the various political groups in the European Parliament have to evaluate the answers received and support or reject Latvia's candidacy of Dombrovskis.
