A package of specific socio-economic measures to deal with the crisis due to the Covid-19 pandemic was proposed to the European Parliament by MEPs from "Renew Europe". Bulgarian MEP and member of the Committee on Employment and Social Affairs Atige Aliyeva-Veli took an active part in the video conference meeting with Commissioner Nikola Schmitt, responsible for the Department of Jobs and Social Rights.
The main topic of discussion was the European Pandemic Recovery Plan and how the EU intends to support countries in implementing effective social measures.
According to Atige Aliyeva-Veli, the Covid-19 pandemic knows no borders. In recent weeks, the EC and all Member States have shown that well-coordinated policies at EU level and good cooperation between Member States are at the heart of containing the pandemic, and should also be at the heart of developing a strategy to overcome the economic and social consequences from her.
„I welcome the actions taken so far by the EC and the Member States and believe that together we can achieve even more. Regrettably, the health sector is still experiencing shortages of vital equipment, protective clothing and supplies, meaning that the EU and all Member States must continue to work together to strengthen national health systems. A huge number of SMEs, hundreds of thousands of self-employed people and a huge number of workers are placed in a situation of uncertainty and we need to mobilize all the tools available to be able to limit job losses and help ensure the necessary liquidity for SMEs. Special measures should be aimed at the most vulnerable and needy people and the sectors that are most severely affected, such as agriculture, transport and tourism," said the Bulgarian MEP.
Atige Aliyeva-Veli summarized the demands of MEPs from "Renew Europe" in order to help citizens:
• Greater support for SMEs, workers and the self-employed;
• Better coordination of social security systems between Member States;
• Measures against youth unemployment;
• Investments in digitization and digital skills;
• Improving working conditions and health measures;
• Restoring EU independence by relocating production back to the EU where possible;
• Investments in skills and competences to meet labor market needs and to support the transition to a climate-neutral economy.
